Sharp is gearing up a pair of Android tablets that will go on sale in Japan on December 10th. The Galapagos eBook tablets will be available in two sizes, the smaller one having a 5.5-inch display screen while the larger having a screen size that is nearly double, 10.8-inches.
These tablets first came to light at the end of September this year and pre-orders will be accepted from December 3rd onwards, and guess what, these won’t be cheap Android tablets. Japanese buyers can expect to pay $476 for the smaller unit and $714 for the larger device which will come with an 8GB SD card. To put these prices into perspective, the Apple iPad sells in the island nation for $580.
As a quick summary, the smaller Sharp Galapagos tablet will have and LCD display screen that supports 1024×768 resolution. It has also been optimized for reading books and has a trackball that can be used to scroll between pages. The larger 10.8-inch device has a 1,366×800 resolution display and its strength lies in magazine content that has been setup in a two page format.
Like other companies that have eBook tablets, Sharp will also manage the content for their devices and expects to have more then 30,000 books, magazines and newspapers when the devices go on sale.
