Gamers and power users love the idea of owning their own supercomputer, and SGI just might be the first to make such dreams come true. SGI recently introduced the Octane III, a “personal supercomputer,” at this week’s Intel Developer Forum (IDF). For starters, this behemoth packs up to 80 high-performance cores and almost 1 terabyte of memory.
The Octane III is seen as an attempt to match high performance with the portability and availability of a traditional desktop PC. It was primarily designed for workplace environments, and offers unmatched computer power for various applications. So nope, the Octane III wasn’t really designed for Crysis players, although there isn’t a doubt it can handle that, too.
The Octane III will cost around $8,000, a fair price to ask for the sheer computing power and a pre-installed platform that supports several HPC applications. It’s a fair buy if the physics lab you work in has allocated an appropriate R&D budget, but you may have to think twice if you’re just getting it for the gaming.
