At the end of World War 2, American pilot Gale Halvorson was reported to have airdropped candy over a bombed Germany as a symbol of new hope for the German children.
Seedbomb draws it’s inspiration from this story and attempts to counteract the detrimental effects of global deforestation and desertification.
Seedbomb is a biodegradable plastic capsule that contains nutrient rich soil, moisture and plant seeds. The goal would be to take large quantities of seedbombs, fly them over an affected area and airdrop them so that as the “bombs” drop, they can release their contents of soil, seeds and moisture.
We’ve seen similar designs used on a small scale and the challenge was always to drop the bombs over the target and account for the correct height and wind speeds to ensure proper release. To do this as widespread as these project designers want to take it will be a challenge, but hats off to them for their green earth project.
