On Monday, Santa Clara, CA based SeaMicro unveiled their SM1000 server lineup that packs a powerful 512 separate Intel Atom processors within a 10u rack mount space. The goal of the new server is to offer up an alternative to the high power consumption required by many of today’s servers. The SM1000 expects to reduce both energy usage and space requirements by up to 75%.
Along with the 512 Intel CPUs, the SM1000 will support out of the box both Gbit and 10-Gbit Ethernet connections. Units will also ship with load balancing and server management software, two rather important components for a server of this magnitude. If you’re wondering if we might see SeaMicro release additional servers lines using competitor CPUs, it seems unlikely, at least in the foreseeable future as the Atom CPU chips have an efficiency rate that is 3.2 times greater then other x86 based processors.
