The heavy flooding that has taken place throughout Thailand has affected many lines of business and one that has been hit quite hard has been the computer industry with events in that region of the world limiting the number of hard drives that are available.
The entire tech industry has been impacted by the conditions in Thailand, but one company that has been hit quite hard has been Seagate. Like others in its niche, it was hoped that things would stabilize sooner rather then later, but according to reports, this does not appear to be the case. In fact, it is believed that the manufacturing delays will result in hard drive shortages to remain throughout all of this year. By Seagate’s own estimates, the shortage of drives will number about 150 million units and this number does seem accurate with an independent research company, Gartner putting the estimates around the same as well.
We’re still very early into the New Year, but this shortage of drives is expected to have some impact and as we progress through the year there is the potential that consumers will be faced with higher prices or delays in certain models being released on time. What are your thoughts, do you think the impact that you will see in your local retail outlets will be substantial?
