When it comes to hard drive technology, there are two viable options. There are hard disk drives which offers lots of storage space on the cheap but it can be a bit on the slow side. The other main option are the solid state drives which are fast, expensive, but come with smaller storage space.

Seagate has launched their Momentus XT HDD which they call the “world’s first independent solid-state hybrid drive.” The 2.5-inch drive tries to offer the best of both technologies by being fast yet affordable and with abundant drive space.

The drives are operating system independent and are available in three different drive sizes, namely 250GB, 320GB and 500GB. Pricing is set at $113, $122 and $153 respectively. The drives are a bit more expensive then a conventional hard drive, but cheaper then most solid state drive. The Seagate Momentus XT drives will utilize a SATA 3Gb/s interface and come with native command queuing.
