Recruit Co Ltd, a Japanese company is using a new form of advertising in the hopes of attracting customers to the restaurants and cafes that are located in the underground subways systems within Tokyo.
The principal behind the new method is to have an advertisement play on a 42 inch LCD screen to capture the attention of commuters. As commuters view the ads, the LCDs will emit an aroma, which will reflect the advertisement being played. The hope is that the combination of the visual and the aroma will lead customers to the nearby restaurants, thereby increasing business for them.

This isn’t the first time that a corporations have tried scent advertising. For some time now, movie studios have been trying to enhance the movie going experience, essentially a move to justify the high cost of going to the movies. In this regard, they have been playing around with the idea of using scents in theaters that would be released at specific times during the movie to correspond with the onscreen action. Currently, scents within theaters is not a mainstream occurrence but it is something that is being tossed around.
