Japanese brewery Sapporo Holdings announced that they intend to make the first space beer using a third generation barley that spent five months on board the International Space Station. The thought behind this project is down the road, as man spends more time in space, there will be a need to make a home like atmosphere as who knows, an astronaut may come back from work, put his feet up and drink a cold beer.
Sapporo executive Junichi Ichikawa advised that they intend to finish brewing the beer by November. It is anticipated that the space grain will be sufficient for 100 bottles of space beer. At this time, there are no plans to make this a commercial venture, but you can bet there will be a lot of interest if this ever did go commercial, even if just for the novelty of trying something new.
In testing done on the space barley, no DNA differences were observed between the space and terrestrial version.
