True to their word and with no real surprise, Samsung Electronics has officially confirmed the Samsung Wave at the MWC today. The Samsung Wave or also known by its more boring name, the S8500, is powered by the Bada operating system, an OS that was developed in house. It is also the basis of the name for the new Samsung mobile phone as the definition of Bada in Korean is ocean.
Aside from its name, the Wave will features Samsung’s latest Super AMOLED screen technology in the 3.3-inch display that promises vibrant colors and digital images that are bright and crisp. The technology has also said to have been improved allowing for better outdoor viewing.
The Wave is powered by a 1GHz processor Snapdragon processor which is common in a number of mobile phones including Google’s own Nexus One. This should be a real plus in watching digital videos, especially considering the brighter display screen, not to mention that the Wave supports 720p HD video and has codec support for the popular media formats DIVX, WMV and Xvid.
For the user interface, the Wave runs TouchWiz 3.0 which is Samsung’s proprietary UI. The UI is said to be more user friendly this time around, supporting Twitter and Facebook widget customization of the home screen as well as offering mobile users up to 10 different home screens.
Rounding out the features are a 5MP camera that comes with flash. Samsung has high hopes for their new phone and their open platform OS, Bada, for which they will be developing an application store, similar to the Apple iPhone apps store or the Google Marketplace.
We should see the Samsung phone in stores this April, but pricing information was not released although Samsung did say their goal was to develop “smartphones for everyone” so hopefully the price will be reasonable.
