Samsung Ownes 61% Of The 3D TV Market

In the past year, we’ve seen a real emphasis placed upon 3D television sets and some of the earlier consumer electronics trade shows were dominated by news of 3D TVs being released by the various hardware vendors. At that time, no company wanted to get into a situation where they were slow out of the gate, only to find themselves behind the eight ball.

Fast forward to today and we see that the 3D TV market just hasn’t grown at the rate at which manufacturers would have liked. There are a couple of reasons behind this fact and some of the bigger reasons cited has to be the cost of the technology as well as the limited choice of 3D programming. Lets also not forget about the 3D glasses which are not only expensive, but something that end users want to do away with when watching TV at home.

In any case, the 3D TV market will change with time as the technology improves and the prices come down. For now though, we can make some general points about this market and the first of them being that Samsung has 61% of the global 3D TV market and this includes both plasma and LED models. The 61% figure were the latest numbers between May 22nd and June 18th and covers both number of units sold and the dollar share associated with these units. For the sake of comparison, NPD also has Samsung leading the pack, but the numbers are a bit lower at 50%.
