Samsung is well known for their consumer electronics products such as televisions and display screens but lesser known is that they also have a line of hard drives for sale.
Samsung has announced the 3.5-inch 1TB Spinpoint F3 hard drive. This isn’t the first 1TB hard drive, but what makes this interesting is the way in which Samsung has advanced hard drive technology.
The new drives have an increased capacity by using just 2 500GB platters instead of the traditional three or four. The drives have been designed to be used in servers as well as high end desktop computers.
By reducing the number of platters used, data access times are improved significantly as seek times are reduced. The other advantage of the new design is fewer mechanical parts are used which means less chance of hard drive failure due to such things as shock damage.
The Spinpoint F3 drives have a spin rate of 7200RPM and include a 3.0 Gbps SATA interface, 16/32MB buffer, NoiseGuard and SilentSeek.
A 500GB dual platter hard drive is currently available for sale with the 1TB version expected to ship this August. Pricing has not been made public yet.
