Samsung Develops Worlds Fastest ARM Cortex A8 Mobile Core

Samsung 1Ghz Mobile CPU Core

Samsung Electronics has developed the worlds fastest mobile core processor. Codenamed Hummingbird, the Cortex A8 core delivers 2000DMIPS at 1GHz, includes 32KB data and instruction caches, and a customizable L2 cache size.

The challenge in reaching this operating clock speed was to try and keep power consumption low and in order to do this, Hummingbird uses proprietary primitive cells and design circuits, a semi-custom design flow as well as Intrinsity based Fast14 high-speed domino logic and RTL FastCore.

In 2008, the market for cellphone application processors was $2 billion dollars and this number is projected to grow to $6.1 billion in 2013. Having developed the fastest core processor will certainly help them capture their fair share of this market and Samsung already has plans to introduce the new core technology in it’s standard mobile SoC products that are currently under development.
