Samsung 3D HDTV Glasses Get Priced

CES 2010 saw 3D technology come to the forefront of consumer electronics with TV manufacturers touting their new 3D TV lineups. Samsung was one of those companies and recently, their new Samsung C7000 55-inch 3D LED TV went up for pre-order.

Most notable is this TV is missing a key accessory to make use of the 3D features and that is the absence of 3D glasses. No 3D glasses means no 3D programming. Samsung expects consumers to purchase a set of glasses which are priced at $150 each. If you have a family of four, you are looking at an additional investment of $600 above and beyond the purchase price of the C7000 which retails for $3,300.

Additionally, the Samsung 3D glasses are designed only in adult sizes and require another expenditure for proprietary CR2025 batteries and apparently, these are not rechargeable batteries. 3D technology is new and a lot of TV makers know that they can overprice their devices, at least for now. In many ways, this is reminiscent of what we see with printers and expensive print cartridges.

Perhaps in time, we’ll see a move away from active technology to a more passive technology that is deployed in local movie theaters which would certainly result in some cheap 3D glasses.

I have a Samsung 3D TV with the 3D glasses included (2 Prs.) I am interested in getting another 2 pairs for friends that come over this will cost me another $400.00 for a set of 2 rechargable sets of glasses.
I probably will bite the bullet and pay that cost because it may be a long time before the price comes down
