Less then a month into 2010 and the HTC Dream has become somewhat of a marketing nightmare for Rogers Mobility. First was the news that the Android phone would not receive an OS upgrade, to which Rogers customers responded quite vocally. Acting on this, Rogers did offer an optional upgrade to an HTC Magic with a couple of provisions.
Word is today that Rogers Mobility will now stop the sale of the HTC Dream through both their online store and their bricks and mortar locations. The reason for this is a bug which prevents 911 emergency calls from being placed unless the GPS receiver is disabled.
It’s believed that a software patch will be available in Android 1.5 to address this issue, the release of which is being expedited by HTC. For now though, if you happen to own an HTC Dream, you can disable the GPS receiver fairly easily by going to your phone settings => location => remove checkmark from “Enable GPS Satellite”.
