David Braben, a a software designer has developed a computer that sets a new floor to the term cheap computer. This PC was created with one objective and that was to bring affordable computing to kids across the globe.
His concept is very similar to other projects of its kind, most notably the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project which aims to bring affordable computing to children throughout the world, including first world countries. To keep costs as low as possible, Braben has turned to Linux as the operating system of choice as it is a free download and open source with a large development community that backs it. The specific flavour of Linux found on this unit is Ubuntu.
In terms of the hardware components, this device has essentially the same types of components that are found on mobile phones. The processor itself is a 700 Mhz ARM processor while the RAM comes in at 128MB. The device has an SD card slot and supports video out at a resolution of 1080p. Finally, there is also a USB data port so that users would be able to connect up a wired keyboard and there is also an HDMI output port for hooking this up to a TV or display screen.
It is expected that the device will go on sale within a year.
