RadioShack Going In For An Overhaul

Radio Shack - The Shack

RadioShack is pretty much an 80′s icon, known to everyone as the place where that darned headphone adapter or any other mundane electronic accessory could be picked up. Today, though, it’s been one of the hardest hit electronics stores in the recession. While box stores like Best Buy and Wal-Mart have managed to get by with big ticket sales (TV’s and PC’s), RadioShack hasn’t been able to follow suit – quite simply, their stores were too small.

Following large-scale layoffs and store closures, RadioShack seems to be going for an overhaul. This week, it announced a new marketing campaign that will give the store the nickname “The Shack,” in hopes of revitalizing limp sales.

This development comes off the heels of a deal that RadioShack made last month to sell T-mobile handsets. Apparently, management believes this kind of big-ticket wares on their store shelves will be just what it takes to revive the ailing company.

“Rebooting” is always a good thing to do when there’s nowhere else to go but up, but some loyal RadioShack fans are questioning the move. Would the name “The Shack” really bring in the crowds, and not alienate them? Would the world really need another mobile phone store? Things are definitely looking optimistic, but let’s hope RadioShack’s popularity holds out.
