Parrot’s Remote Controlled Helicopter Using An iPhone

Parrot AR Drone

Parrot has made quite an impression with their remote controlled helicopter. The company, mostly known for speaker systems and bluetooth headsets has designed an RC helicopter called the AR Drone.

This gadget (or quadricopters) has four stabilizing rotors as well as a digital camera mounted on its front end. The chopper is then linked to an Apple iPhone or iPod touch through a WiFi network connection so that whatever the chopper sees via its wireless camera is then transmitted back to the Apple device which in turn can be used to pilot the helicopter.

Control of the quadricopter is said to be quite straightforward. The helicopter comes with Smart Parrot Piloting Software (SPPS) which makes use of the iPhone’s motion sensor so that a simple tilt of the phone causes the chopper to move in that direction.

The AR drone has been built for one purpose, playing augmented reality video games, be it head to head games versus your friends or solo flight missions. No word on how much this bad boy toy will cost.
