We’ve featured more then our fair share of rugged products here on Coated, including mobile phones, hard drives and laptops. Today, it’s Panasonic that has captured the spotlight with their Toughbook C1.
Often when we’ve seem rugged devices, it’s been pretty apparent just by looking at them that they are rugged. This is because the devices can be on the bulky side with the extra bulk providing a cushion for the device against drops and bumps. The Toughbook C1 is a little different and at first glance, you may not realize that this is a rugged device.
According to the Japanese company, the C1 is not only rugged, but the company also claims that this device is the lightest 12.1-inch convertible tablet computer available today. With today’s refresh of this device, Panasonic has upped the hardware specifications. What we see is the base model now coming standard with a 320GB HD and it has a battery that has been rated for 12 hours of active use. There is also 2GB RAM which can be pushed up to 8GB if needed and the C1 is said to be at least one third faster then the earlier model due to its upgraded processor which is an Intel Core i5-2520M vPro.
In terms of network connectivity, the Panasonic Toughbook includes the usual options such as wireless 802.11, Bluetooth and optional 3G support. 3G network support can be added through the use of a Gobi 2000 3G mobile broadband device which will function on the three major US mobile carriers (Verizon, AT&T and Sprint) which means that if you need 3G, you’re pretty well covered.
All of the innards of the C1 brings the device in at about 3.28 lbs and this wouldn’t be complete without mentioning that in terms of its rugged features, the C1 can be dropped from a height of 30″ and it comes with a spill resistant keyboard.
