Shooting in 3-D used to be a very complicated and expensive process, involving a fragile rig and two cameras. Panasonic may be out to change the 3-D filming game with the first-ever twin-lens, full-HD, 3D camcorder. The idea of shooting a 3-D movie with only one camera should be very exciting news for independent filmmakers.
The twin-lens camera itself is much less bulky and less fragile than the current 3-D filming rigs, so it’s likely to find its way into Hollywood sets very soon. It costs $21,000, so it may take a while for independent filmmakers to get their hands on one — although with the future of cinema deeply set with 3-D, it would be a good investment.
Panasonic plans to launch the 3-D camcorder in the fourth quarter of 2010. No doubt it’s going to launch a slew of new 3-D camcorders in 2011 and beyond, and it’s likely we’ll be seeing 3-D camcorders at the consumer level sooner rather then later.
