OLED (organic light-emitting diodes) have made it to billboards and TV’s recently, but they haven’t exactly broken into the PC industry yet. But according to Samsung, all that will change by the third quarter of 2010 – when Samsung plans to come out with their first OLED notebook.
Samsung is the pioneer of OLED technology for portable PC’s and the company has already come out with an OLED notebook prototype. The technology isn’t that commercially available yet, but Samsung, among many other big players in the notebook industry, believe that OLED represents the future of portable PC’s and that the technology will become the norm over the next five years.
Kyu Uhm, Samsung’s Head of Worldwide Sales and Marketing for computers, made the announcement during the IFA launch of the N-Series and X-Series netbooks and notebooks. Samsung believes the day of the one-PC-per-household is long gone and that personal computers are finally becoming personal again.
OLED technology for notebooks and netbooks may finally solve the perennial problem of compromising between style, performance, and battery power. With OLED technology driving down costs for notebook and netbook PC’s, it’ll be much easier for people to get their hands on their own personal computer.
