The touchscreen interface that is commonly seen on smartphones such as the Apple iPhone have been around for quite some time. Their popularity and appeal stem from the fact that this interface is quite easy to use, simply click the icon for the specific phone function required.
As popular as touchscreen devices are, there are others that are looking for the next great thing. Take for example, professors Masatoshi Ishikawa and Dr. Takashi Komuro from Tokyo University that are working on a new technology for these mobile gadgets that will be a “vision-based Input Interface.”
With their high speed finger tip tracking system, mobile phones would be fitted with a front facing camera. In this demonstration, they specifically used a digital camera with a 154 FPS (frame per second) sensor which would mean a higher quality camera would be required on our phones for this technology to work. The small camera would have the ability to capture figure gestures and can translate them into actions be it point and click, browse and type. As with any new technology, the interface would take some time to get used to but it does bring us another step closer towards Minority Report.
