Back in the summer of 2009, a patent was submitted for the Nintendo Wii football controller. At the time, it was widely believed that such a gaming accessory would not come to fruition because of the serious risk of injury to nearby gamers or more likely, a cracked screen display due to the accidental release of the football. With the Nintendo Wii, such incidents have occurred in the past as gamers have thrown their Wii remotes through the screens accidentally and in fact, entire websites are devoted to Wii injuries.
However, it turns out that the Nintendo Wii football controller is legitimate courtesy of CTA Digital. It’s a soft football, but still, lodged within it is a hard shelled game controller so you have to wonder if this device will spawn a whole new line of accessories, namely HDTV screen protectors.
The CTA website does list the new controller, but currently there are no details for either pricing or a release date. Of course, the Nintendo accessory comes with the standard recommendation that you do need to wear the wrist strap to prevent accidental release of the football.
The game controller is compatible with all Wii football games that require the Wii remote including Madden NFL 09 All-Play, Madden NFL 10, Backyard Football ‘09 and Backyard Football to name just a few.
