The Nintendo Wii is one of the more popular game consoles available and not that this needs much confirmation, but this was evidenced by a recent statement made by Nintendo in which they reported the sale of over 30 million units. With such a popular console, there has always been talk about refreshing the line and adding some new features to make it just that much better.
Topping the list is high definition gaming. Apparently, the next generation Wii, or Wii 2 will come with two new surprises. First is HD gaming and the second is a blu-ray player along the lines of the Sony PlayStation 3. HD games makes total sense and is somethings that is probably a given, but there is some debate about the accuracy of the blu-ray player as it is an expensive component that will increase the final price of the console in an already competitive market. Furthermore, what will be the role of physical media in the Wii 2? Moving away from the concept of games being distributed on media to one where games are downloaded would generate more revenue for Nintendo because it eliminates the used game market.
Time will tell what will and will not be included in the Wii 2 and it’s unlikely that we will see the new Nintendo Wii any earlier then 2011.
