The numbers are in for the third quarter of this year and as expected, the Android operating system is firmly in the top spot when it comes to mobile phones. According to the Nielsen report, Android now owns 42.8% of the market and this represents nearly a 4% growth from the past quarter. In second spot, we see Apple’s iOS resting with a 28.3% share of the market.
Like Android, iOS has seen some growth compared to its past quarter, but unlike Android, the growth of iOS can best be described as limited. However, Apple is also in a unique situation. Whereas Android is an open source operating system that can be deployed by any hardware vendor, Apple’s iOS is a closed operating system that is limited to just Apple products. With iOS having a 28.3% share of the market, this makes Apple the biggest smartphone vendor today. Rounding out the top four spots include Research In Motion with their BlackBerry OS in third spot with a 17.8% share of the market while Microsoft is seated in the fourth spot with Windows Phone 7 having a 6.1% of the market. By most accounts, Apple had a slower Q3 and this was understandable as customers were waiting for the launch of their newest iPhone which launched as the iPhone 4s. It’s generally expected that when the new Nielsen results come out for Q4, we could very well see Apple’s market share grow just a little more.
