All signs seem to be pointing to the fact that Apple will indeed be coming out with a smaller form factor tablet in the coming months. The fact that there were rumblings last year indicating that Apple was wanting to address the challenges poised by the Kindle Fire did seem to be the start of these rumours which simply grew stronger with the changing market forces observed this year.
These changes included a whole new competitor in the form of Google with their Nexus 7 tablet. Last week, we heard The Wall Street Journal go on the record to state that an iPad mini was on the way and today, it seems that these rumours are being given even more weight by The New York Times.
By all indications, a smaller form factor iPad will come with a cheaper price tag, one that will be “significantly less” then the current $499. If correct, the mini iPad will have a 7.85-inch screen size and it’s purpose will be to offer consumers more choice when it comes to the iPad brand. The fact that Apple is looking to launch a smaller screen iPad does in fact go against the Steve Jobs’ vision, but then again, he is someone that is known to have changed his mind in the face of changing market conditions.
