New Toshiba 3D TV Requires No Glasses

Toshiba is preparing a new lineup of 3D television sets that will launch in Japan before the end of 2010. This new TV will eliminate the requirement for 3D glasses through the use of autostereoscopy 3D technology.

According to Yuko Sugahara, one of the biggest drawbacks to 3D TVs are the 3D glasses themselves. Most people hate to wear them, especially when sitting at home watching a 3D movie. This is further compounded if the viewer wears glasses himself and must fit the 3D glasses over his own reading glasses. Eliminating the requirement for these special glasses will hopefully allow the technology to be better adopted within the home.

3D technology is here to stay, it’s just going to take some time for it to get a foothold. James Cameron, the director of the Titanic and Avatar believes that 3D is “not something that is going to go away” but that it will require some time to “catch up with the marketplace because there isn’t enough content”
