I don’t think anyone would be surprised to hear that there is a new scam that has come on the scene that aims to take advantage of users that are interested in Facebook’s new video calling service.
The Facebook service is new and has generated a lot of interest amongst Facebook users. Anytime there is a new service or product, there will always be scammers that are looking to make a fast buck off of it and video calling is no exception. According to Naked Security, the new scam doesn’t actually utilize the video calling feature itself.
Rather, its an application that promises users the ability to use the Facebook service. The app has a typical call to action requesting that users “click me to start video calling”. The problem is that if someone falls for this and clicks it, it will try to access your Facebook credentials and if it is successful, it will gain access to your contact list of friends and associates. From here, you’ll see the app start sending out spam messages to everyone on your list and this messages will contain links to affiliate sites.
So, as always, just be careful out there on which apps you choose or don’t choose.
