This morning, Samsung Electronics (SEO:005930) and Skye announced the launch of two new Samsung televesion sets, LED 7000 and LED 8000. The two new models will come an embedded copy of Skye software allowing channel surfers to make VOIP (Voice Over IP) calls. The service will be bi-directional allowing users to both make outgoing and well as receive incoming phone calls.
The integration of embedded software is a new trend that we are seeing in consumer electronics and for the buyer, this is probably a welcomed change as there is no longer a requirement to have to worry about external cable boxes, set-top boxes as well as messy cables to deal with.
The user interface on the new TV sets is expected to be just as user friendly and will be menu driven with an emphasis on simplicity. Using just the remote control, users will be able to perform all necessary functions including the creation of Skype accounts and if you have a FREETALK TV camera attached to the TV, you can also engage in video calls straight from your comfy sofa.
Samsung’s offering follows similar announcements made by both LG and Panasonic at CES 2010 in January.
