Two million people have downloaded the Microsoft Office 2010 public beta since its release November last year, and Microsoft believes they are on the right track again. The company has just announced that a new release candidate has been made available, but only to a select few testers in Microsoft’s Technology Adoption Programme (TAP).
It’s mouth-watering news, especially considering some of the challenges that Microsoft has faced over the last few years, most recently with the backlash with their Microsoft Vista operating system. Unfortunately, Microsoft currently has no plans to make the new release candidate available to a wider audience.
So it’s likely we’ll be stuck with the public beta version until Office 2010 launches this June. The new release candidate’s availability may mean that development work is complete, so we’re hopeful the good news equates to an earlier release.
All Microsoft can say at this point is that everything’s on track for a June release. It should be worth the wait — and when Office 2010 does make its debut, I’m expecting a renewal of the cloud-vs-offline computing wars.
