The new iPod Touch received a teardown by iFixit last week, and what they found was an interesting glimpse into what might be in store for us in future versions of the Touch.
The new iPod Touch uses a Broadcom BCM4329 chip, which supports 802.11n (which in turn isn’t even in the iPhone 3GS). If this feature was switched on, it would obviously be very cool for users with N routers. Aside from that, the chip also supports FM transmission — while unlikely, we might be seeing the iPod Touch streaming music directly to car stereos down the line.
Another interesting bit about the new iPod Touch is that it has a tiny, 6x6x3mm space between the wireless antenna and the Braodcom chip. This seems to be a receptacle for something — a camera, perhaps? This could mean that the camera that’s now in the new iPod Nano may have originally been meant for the Touch, but was cancelled at the last minute. (There have been rumors about this.)
This is all just speculation, of course — it’s likely that if the guys at Apple read this article, they’ll probably revamp their plans for the next iPod Touch and come up with something even cooler. We sure hope so!
