New iPhone App Lets Dogs Tweet

Apparently the dogs of the world won’t wait for humanity to fully assimilate itself into Twitter. A new iPhone App is out to hit the App Store this summer, and it will let dogs tweet their feelings whenever they feel like it. The App is called BowLingual, and it should give your little pet a voice on the Internet.

The idea behind BowLingual has actually been around for a while, having its roots in a Japanese gadget bearing the same name. Basically, BowLingual analyzes your dog’s bark and “translates” it into any of six emotions — happy, sad, needy, frustrated, on guard, or self-expressive. The app then chooses a phrase that goes with the emotion, and gives you an option to tweet it to your friends.

Personally, I’ve never wished my dog could tweet, but apparently many dog lovers do. When the original BowLingual device made its debut in Japan, it cost the equivalent of US$100, and Time magazine honored it as one of 2002′s best inventions of the year.

Takara Toys created the original device, and the App was designed by Index Corp. The App will make its rounds in Japan first, starting this summer, before it moseys over to backyards in the US. If this is an App you think you’ll like, then you’ll probably love its $5 price tag.
