Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has confirmed that Sony PlayStation 3 owners will soon have access to a new streaming service that will no longer require a disc, making the offering on par with that which is already available on the Xbox 360. Not only will the Netflix update the user interface (UI) to eliminate the disc requirement, but it will also introduce dynamic updates so that further changes to the Netflix UI can be done easier and faster.
Although few details are available at this time, the Netflix feature should mirror the diskless service that is already available on the Xbox 360, allowing users to access Netflix and then select either a movie or TV show for viewing. Hastings believes that it will be October, just after the next earnings call, when they launch this feature on the PS3.
