Motorola Phones & Cable Boxes To Share Platform

Motorola Phones & Cable Boxes To Share Platform

Motorola (NYSE:MOT), a global communication leader that is involved in the development of a number of electronic products is looking to create a common platform for their set top cable boxes and their mobile phones. The vision of this convergent technology consists of having the Motoblur user interface (UI) that currently resides on the CLIQ and Backflip to be ported over and functional on cable boxes.

According to CEO Sanjay Jha, there are multiple advantages of a common platform including reduced development costs as well as the ability to share “media and features.”

Tentatively, it’s believed that we may start to see the new cable boxes near the end of this year, but a big part of this will be to get the cable companies to buy into this product as the introduction of new custom software will require their approval. It’s an interesting development to see what possibilities reside with an Android powered set top box.
