British mobile carrier O2 has confirmed that they will permit customers to unlock their Apple iPhones for use on competing carrier networks once the customer has fulfilled their contractual obligations. iPhone Pay & Go customers who have had their mobile phone for 12 months will also be eligible for this deal but will be charged a service fee of £14.97 ($25).
Those interested in having an unlocked iphone can do so by calling O2 customer service who will provide the service over the phone. Up until now, Telefónica-owned O2 has been the exclusive carrier of the iPhone, but starting next year, this will all change as Orange and Vodafone will begin carrying the Apple gadgets.
Matthew Key, CEO of Telefonica Europe was asked if this policy guideline would change once the new carriers come on board to which he responded “There is absolutely no truth in that rumour. Once the iPhone becomes available on other UK networks, we will allow O2 customers to unlock their iPhones, although of course they will still need to honour any outstanding contract period they have. At the end of their contract period, they are entirely free to move to another operator – though naturally we hope they won’t want to!”
