OLED displays are very quickly becoming the norm these days, and the race is on to create the biggest displays for residential and commercial use. Next month, Mitsubishi will be unveiling the largest OLED display yet — at 149 inches.
Mitsubishi’s offering is basically a billboard measuring 3264 by 1920 mm. Amsterdam will be the first city to see it in action, at the ISE-2010 trade show due in a matter of weeks. It was only a few months since Mitsubishi showcased their concept for a giant billboard screen using grids of 10x10cm OLED panels.
Sure, the technology can be called cheating. But since this is an advertising billboard, people will be viewing the display from a distance, and the bezels won’t be so obvious (coupled with OLED technology, it shouldn’t be a problem at all). The technology also allows the panels to be arranged into most shapes, even curved configurations.
Mitsubishi’s massive OLED display won’t likely be making its way to living rooms, but we will see them in malls and other commercial areas. Time to get rid of those neon signs!
