Yesterday, we had reported that Apple was looking to develop and launch a new smaller form factor iPad. The fact that one of these devices would be coming on the market was not new, considering the that two of Apple’s biggest competitors, Amazon and Google now have a small screen tablet.
Today, it appears that some major publications have thrown their weight behind these rumors. Both Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal have independently confirmed through their own sources that Apple is indeed planning on launching a mini-iPad, one that will have a screen diameter somewhere between 7-inches and 8-inches. In fact, Apple has already lined up their production lines in Asia so that mass production can begin in two months with a likely launch date to occur before the year is out.
There are however some differences between the rumors that are coming out. Yesterday, it was believed that Sharp would be responsible for providing the display screens which would be IGZO displays as these are thinner and offer a better pixel density. Today’s rumor however suggests that it may not be Sharp afterall that provides the screens, but rather AU Optronics and LG Display. Regardless of who ends up providing the screens, one thing that has remained consistent between the rumors is pricing which appears to be somewhere between $250-$300.
