Miliary Laser Pointer Blinds From 2.5 Miles Away

The US military has developed a new laser weapon to be used on the battle fronts. This isn’t the type of future weapon a la Star Wars but rather, this new weapon is more a device used as a deterrent. Officially called the LA-9/P (or “ocular interruption devices” by the marines), this military grade green laser pointer has an effective range of 2.5 miles away.

So you’ve got some possible hostiles down the road and you’re not quite sure of their intent. This laser pointer has a strength of 250-milliwatt or 1/4,000 the strength of a very small anti-aircraft lasers. Shined in the face of a target and they’ll immediately be aware of your presence and hopefully back off rather then engage.

At long range, the military device has the ability to cause temporary blindness. Although nonlethal, this is a weapon to be handled carefully as could be attested by the dozen or so soldiers stationed in Iraq that were wounded in dazzler “friendly fire” and this was even with the integrated security system designed to prevent eye damage.
