Microsoft Zune Phone Strong Possibility

Microsoft Zune Phone

Back in September, we heard about Project Pink, a Windows powered Microsoft smartphone that was under development by the Redmond giant.

Rumors of Project Pink or the Zune phone have just grown a lot stronger after Microsoft released version 4.2.202.0 desktop software update for their Zune MP3 player yesterday. Although there is no official Microsoft announcement or press release to confirm these findings, it was discovered that post upgrade, buried in the Zune.inf file located at C:\Program Files\Zune\Drivers\Zune, there are lines of code listed as “%Phone.DeviceDesc%”, amongst others.

An even closer inspection of the code shows that there are 3 unique class IDs or product ids which would suggest that there are potentially 3 new Zune phones in the works rather then a Zune phone with just different storage capacities. This would lend some credence to the findings of September 2009, at which time it was believed that more then one Zune phone was being developed. At that time, the phones were codenamed Turtle and Dove.

Next month between February 15-18th in Barcelona, Spain, we have the Mobile World Congress being held. Perhaps, Microsoft will offer more details about the Zune phone at time. The Apple iPhone has always been strong in the market and with the Google Nexus making inroads, it would seem that Microsoft would need to announce something sooner rather then later.
