Microsoft Word ban lifted

MS Word sales will continue for the time being as Microsoft has received a temporary stay (injunction) from an appeals court. The issue stems from early August where a court decision ruled against Microsoft indicating that the tech company had infringed upon a Canadian patent held by software developer i4i Ltd. Specifically, it was the way in which MS Word handles the formatting language XML. As a result, Microsoft was ordered to stop selling MS Word within 60 days as well as pay $290m in punitive damages.

Microsoft had argued that the decision would cause “irreparable harm” to their business model as MS Word is one of the flagship applications in their suite of products MS Office. The other argument made was the time frame to comply with the court order was to short.

The appeals court has agreed and has granted a stay of injunction until September 23rd at which time a new hearing will be held.
