Microsoft Project Natal Showing Noticeable Delay In Motion Capture

Everyone’s keeping a close eye on Microsoft’s (NASDAQ:MSFT) next-generation gaming console, Project Natal, and MTV’s Jonathan Ross has had his hands-on test with the motion-sensing system already. But things aren’t all good for Project Natal — MTV reports that there’s a tiny, but very noticeable, delay with motion-capture.

MTV Multiplayer’s Russ Frusstrick tells us that the Project Natal still isn’t delivering instant motion capture. It’s a very tiny delay, he admits, but the longer you play it, the more noticeable it gets. The delay varies around 0.08 seconds to 0.12 seconds (averaging at 0.10 seconds), but it’s still enough to get in the way of truly enjoyable gaming experience.

But that probably won’t be a problem too big to fix for Microsoft — after all, even Hollywood’s most powerful motion-capture equipment encounter the same slight delays. If Microsoft can cut down on the delay even just a bit, it should be great.

Actually, we think it should — it’s the only way Project Natal can hope to compete with the Nintendo Wii and Sony PS3′s Arc motion controller.
