Microsoft OneApp Platform For Cheap Phones

Microsoft has announced the release of the OneApp platform for cheap, low end non-smartphones. The new application has been designed for developing countries where one most commonly finds “feature phones” and prepaid cell phones.

Similar to downloading a new ringtone, users will have an opportunity to download OneApp from their phone carrier. Once the application is on the cell phone, users will have access to about a dozen or so social applications such as Windows Live Messenger, Facebook and Twitter.

OneApp will make use of cloud computing, storing information on centrally located servers. The purpose of this is to overcome the low memory limitations commonly seen with cheaper cell phones.

It is expected with time that OneApp will become a popular vehicle to distribute new software and will also reduce development costs as software programmers working for wireless carriers will no longer need to test their code on hundreds of feature phone models.
