When you look at the refresh schedules for some products such as the iPhone which can be as short has 12 months, it’s hard to believe that Microsoft’s game console, the Xbox 360 first came on the market 7 years ago.
Having been on the market this long is a recognition of just how well the device has performed but at the same time, it is time for a refresh. For quite some time now, we’ve been hearing about the Xbox 720 which is said to be the successor. The new device which is believed to be diskless is expected to be available in 18 months from now or in 2014. This information comes by way of a Microsoft job advertisement that was posted on their careers website. The specific job is for a marketing position but the job description is quite clear when it says that updated models of their current product line-up are expected within 18 months. One of the devices that is clearly listed in this job ad is the Xbox.
If the job ad is to be believed, we’re looking at a 2014 launch for the Xbox 720 and seeing as how the Xbox 360 came out in November, it’s likely that the next model will be available in November 2014 which would allow Microsoft to take advantage of the Christmas rush. However, we are only going by the few details within this ad. It is also very possible that Microsoft has something else entirely planned for their game console such as perhaps a portable version of the Xbox 360 or maybe better integration with Kinect.
Still, it’s an interesting ad that at the very least does indicate that the Redmond company has some updates on the way.
