Marvell has announced the availability of the SheevaPlug, a low cost ($99) Linux box that is no larger then an ordinary wall power adapter.

Marvell SheevaPlug - Cheap Linux Server

Although small in size, this Linux PC includes an ARM-based 1.2GHz Sheeva embedded processor, 512MB DDR2 RAM, 512MB flash storage, gigabit ethernet and USB 2.0, making it viable as a home server solution.

Setup of this PC gadget is easy, plug it in, connect it to your wired home network and you’re ready to go. Assuming your network supports gigabit transfer speeds, you will see little or no lag when calling up large files across the home network.

SheevaPlug will be popular in the open source community as it supports multiple standard Linux 2.6 kernel distributions. One of the first products to be developed based upon the SheevaPlug is Pogoplug which is a device that takes a portable USB hard drive and converts it to Network Area Storage (NAS) unit that can be accessed from any computer in the home or via the internet using a web-based portal.

The SheevaPlug is energy efficient, with it’s eco-friendly design using only a tenth of the energy of traditional home servers.
