Lytro is a small start up company that was founded within Silicon Valley and according to its founder, Ran Ng, digital photography is in for a change as the company wants to eliminate the problems that are generated with improper focussing.
According to Ran NG, the CEO of Lytro, his company has developed what is known as a “light field” camera and we should see the first of its kind on the market by the end of 2011. These cameras have some unique smarts in them that allow them to not only capture the object of the picture, but also further details about the intensity, colour and position of the light rays. With this information saved, users are able to focus a picture even after the picture has been taken.
In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, NG described his technology to multi-track audio where each instrument within the music piece is recorded on its own and then at a later time, the tracks are mixed to create the final composition. As photography is a visual art, Lytro have provided users with a living example of this technology on their site where you see a photograph. Clicking on the picture brings that specific region into focus while other areas are then blurred. According to the company, their new technology is fully functional in low lighting environments and has the ability to create three dimensional pictures using just one lens.
So far, we’ve seen a situation developing where smartphones have begun to cannibalize the digital camera market due to the increased quality of cameras that are included in each phone. We’ll have to see if Lytro can turn this tide with their first camera, but of course, a big part of their success will depend upon their price point and the portability of their device.
