Low Cost Intel X25-V Solid State Drive

As a newer technology, solid state drives (SSD) have generally maintained a premium price. However, this is about to change with the introduction of the Intel X25-V SSD. The low cost 2.5-inch SATA II drive has been developed for dual drive systems and netbooks where speed and a reliable drive are paramount in maintaining the integrity of the operating system.

The new Intel SSD comes with a storage capacity of 40GB, is based upon the 34nm flash memory architecture and includes TRIM command support, a feature in some operating systems including Microsoft Windows 7 that allows the SSD to maintain its speed throughout its lifetime. The SSD sports a read speed of 135MB/s and a write speed of 35MB/s which is said to be four times faster then the average hard disk drive (HDD) and 43% faster when used in a dual drive environment.

PC manufacturers will be able to order the 40GB Intel SSD at the bulk price of $125 per 1000 devices with consumers ultimately seeing a marked up price from here.
