After its takeover of Sanyo, it didn’t take long for Panasonic to announce that it will be working on a joint venture to develop a new lithium ion battery that is capable of powering all the gadgets & gizmos in the average home for over a week. When Panasonic made the announcement, they were referring to the average Japanese home, not the average power hungry US home.
The new battery is still in the development stage but should be commercially available sometime in 2011. The new technology does sound like another alternative to add to the growing list of alternative green technologies such as fuel cells and solar batteries. Along with this development, Panasonic is also planning to integrate a monitoring system that will allow consumers to view their energy use through their television sets.
