The New York based company behind the popular file sharing application LimeWire has been found liable for copyright infringement in a case that was brought forth by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) some four years ago.
According to District Judge Kimba M. Wood ruling, LimeWire users are responsible for significant amounts of copyright infringements and the company behind the peer to peer application has done little to stop these infractions.
Although the final damages have not been awarded at this time, the RIAA was seeking $150,000 for each infraction. Considering that LimeWire has 50 million unique users each month and according to RIAA numbers, 93% of LimeWires P2P traffic was for the distribution of unauthorized material, damages will be significant and could very well destroy the New York company.
