Everyone’s waiting for the Crunchpad, the Internet-surfing tablet, and the rumored Apple Mac Tablet, but instead of sitting around twiddling your thumbs, you can choose to plunk down $250 for a good starter tablet – the Lighthouse SQ7. It’s pretty much a bare-bones tablet, but it’s quite impressive and useful for its price.
The Lighthouse SQ7 has a 7-inch touchscreen (displaying 800×480p) and runs on Ubuntu, with a browser running on WebKit. Its specs aren’t anything to write home about – think of 667MHz ARM processor, 1GB of storage space, and only 128MB of RAM. It also has a rather limited 5 hours of battery life. Since it runs on Ubuntu, its easy to find other programs you can use on it. That is, if they can still fit.
Lighthouse SQ7 is actually more of a social networking tool than anything else. It comes with a one-button function that converts anything you say into text, and posts them on Twitter or Facebook. And instead of typing in URL’s, you can just say them out loud.
Of course, we’ve yet to see what happens when you say something that’s longer than 140 characters, or if you try to use the text-to-speech function in a loud party. But at $250, the Lighthouse SQ7 should give you your easy Facebook fix every time you crash on the couch.
