LG was quite the show on the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last week, unveiling their latest Android-based smartphone, the GT540. Judging by its form factor and performance, it’s likely going to be a midrange-market offering, probably aiming for mobile device users still wondering which smartphone to get as their first.

The form factor is a little on the simple side, with a chrome rim on the sides and wavy ridges at the back. There are also quite a few attractive options for color. The GT540 has three hardware buttons and two touch-sensitive navigation buttons, and has most of the trappings of the “standard” smartphone — Wi-Fi, 3G, GPS, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a 3-MP camera. The funny thing is that we still don’t know what version of Android the GT540 uses — checking the CES 2010 show floor model brings back an error message.

What makes the GT540 smartphone exciting is that this may be the first LG Android phone to make it to US shores. Pricing and carrier information are as of yet unavailable, but we already have a release date — April 2010. Should be interesting to see how LG’s Android phones perform outside Europe.
