Kindle Touch On The Way? Amazon Buys Touchscreen Company

Sure, Apple’s iPad is still the brunt of jokes and jeers even today. But despite its perceived drawbacks, it’s still a force to be reckoned within the tablet/e-reader industry — very quickly and easily leapfrogging the popularity of what was once the pinnacle of industry technology, Amazon’s Kindle.

As more and more tablets/e-readers are coming out with touchscreen technology, Amazon seems to have finally realized that they’re very quickly falling behind the times. This may be the rationale behind their recent acquisition of Touchco, a touchscreen company that owns technology that should jibe well with Amazon’s own.

Going technical, there’s not much to say about Touchco’s technology — it’s just a touchscreen that Kindles can adopt easily. Perhaps the most interesting thing to say about it is that it can finally bring color Kindles to the market.

I tend to wonder whether Amazon isn’t really out to regain dominance in the e-reader market and is simply doing damage control at this point. Even if a Kindle Touch came out yesterday, it’ll still be way behind the competition. Another worry — our hopes for cheaper Kindles may have well been wiped away, although hopefully market conditions will set the price point.
